Securing Shelter for Homeless Families and Individuals

In New York City, every individual has a legal right to shelter. To apply for temporary, emergency shelter, whether it is your first time or you are re-applying, go to the following locations. For information on what you will need to bring when applying for shelter, click here to visit the Department of Homeless Services website.

Families with minor children:
NYC's Department of Homeless Services Prevention Assistance & Temporary Housing (PATH) office at:
346 Powers Avenue
Bronx, NY 10454

Directions to PATH: (Subway) 6 train to Cypress Avenue. When you get off the train you will be on 138th Street between Jackson and Cypress Avenues. Walk one block west to Cypress Avenue. Turn right on Cypress Avenue and walk north to 141st Street. Turn right onto 141st Street. Walk on 141st Street until you get to Powers Avenue. Turn left onto Powers Avenue and look for #346. The PATH office will be on the right side of the street.

(Bus) Bx33 to 138th Street. You will be on 138th Street between Jackson and Cypress Avenues. Follow walking directions described above. Or take Bx17 to Southern Blvd. and 141st Street. Walk three blocks west to Powers Avenue. Turn right onto Powers Avenue, go to #346.


Adult Families (with no minor children):
Department of Homeless Services' Adult Family Intake Center (AFIC) at 400-430 East 29th Street in Manhattan. Take 6 train to 28th Street.


Single, Adult Men
:
Department of Homeless Services Intake Center at 400-430 East 30th Street (at First Avenue) in Manhattan. Take 6 train to 28th Street.
Or
a 24-hour Drop-In Center for Adults which provides homeless single adults with hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, clothing, medical care, recreational space, employment referrals, and other social services. Staff at centers can also help homeless people find a safe and secure place to sleep. Click here for a list of drop-in centers and locations.


Single, Adult Women
:
Department of Homeless Services Intake Centers:

Franklin Shelter at 1122 Franklin Avenue in the Bronx. Take 2 train to 149th Street and then #55 bus to 166th Street and 3rd Avenue.

HELP Women's Shelter--116 Williams Avenue in Brooklyn (between Liberty Ave. & Glenmore Ave.). Take C train to Liberty Avenue.
Or
a 24-Hour Drop-In Center for Adults which provides homeless single adults with hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, clothing, medical care, recreational space, employment referrals, and other social services. Call the Safe Horizon Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-621-4673 to secure safe shelter options.


Know Your Rights

If you need help in applying for shelter or have questions about your legal rights regarding shelter, contact the Homeless Rights Project of the Legal Aid Society at 1-800-649-9125. If you are calling for the first time, please call on TUESDAY mornings between 10am and 12 noon.

ACCESS NYC

Use ACCESS NYC, a tool of nyc.gov, to find out if you and/or your family qualify for city, state, and/or federal human service benefit prgrams. ACCESS NYC is a free online service that allows users to anonymously pre-screen for 21 programs including child care services, adult and child health care services, public assistance, food stamps, tax credit programs, and Section 8 housing. The program is available in seven languages (Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Haitian-Creole, and English). By entering basic household information, users will recieve a list of the programs for which they are potentially eligible, can learn about these programs (program descriptions, how to apply, office locations), and can print partially-complete application forms. Advantage and HSP Tenants Making Side Deal Payments


Landlords often seek payment in excess of the maximum monthly rent authorized under the Housing Stability Plus program. If you, or your client, is a recipient of Housing Stability Plus and has been asked to sign or has signed an agreement to make payments to the landlord in excess of the authorized HSP rent on the lease, you should be aware that landlords cannot legally collect such payments. Drop-In Centers provide homeless single adults with hot meals, showers, laundry facilities, clothing, medical care, recreational space, employment referrals, and other social services.
